The Tree Partnership is one of four elements of the SCAQMD’s Governing Board’s 2009 Helping Hand Initiative to help keep the region on the path toward clean air while lending assistance to businesses and local governments during the economic recession.  By partnering with cities and counties, this element of the Helping Hand Initiative aims to create healthy urban forests that will assist us in reducing greenhouse gas and other pollutants.  The Tree Partnership provides match funding to local governments for “additional” tree planting.  The goals of the program are to increase the benefits trees provide in reducing criteria and toxic air pollutants along with greenhouse gases.  This program also helps to provide temporary employment opportunities for students, community educational outreach, and increase aesthetic benefits trees provide along with providing more walkable neighborhoods.

The tree planting projects include:

  • Trees that have low biogenic VOC emissions and are native species to California
  • Trees are appropriate for the area they will be planted
  • Trees will be planted on public lands
  • Tree maintenance is provided after planting
  • Outreach and educational components are provided

In 2009, the SCAQMD solicited two separate rounds of funding and has selected 38 local governments to receive funding.  The cities and counties participating in the Tree Partnership include:

Anaheim Downey Rancho Santa Margarita
Azusa El Monte Redlands
Baldwin Park El Segundo Rialto
Bell Gardens Fullerton Riverside

Cathedral City La Canada Flintridge San Dimas
Chino Long Beach San Fernando
